About this tool
Europe and many other regions quote consumption as liters per 100 kilometers, where a lower number is better, while the US and UK quote miles per gallon, where a higher number is better. US and UK gallons differ in size, so 30 US mpg is not the same as 30 UK mpg.
As a rule of thumb, 235.2 divided by US mpg gives L/100km.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Why are the US and UK mpg values different?
- A UK (imperial) gallon is about 20% larger than a US gallon, so the same car has a higher UK mpg figure.
- Is lower or higher better?
- A lower L/100km is more efficient, while a higher mpg or km/L is more efficient.
