Auto-tagging and UTM parameters
Auto-tagging adds a gclid so Google Analytics can import cost and click data from Google Ads. If you also add UTMs, check your Google Analytics 4 setting for manual tagging overrides, because it decides which values appear in reports.
If you are unsure, keep auto-tagging on and use UTMs for the dimensions that matter to you, such as consistent campaign names across platforms.
Recommended values
- utm_source=google
- utm_medium=cpc
- utm_campaign=campaign name matching your Google Ads campaign
- utm_term=keyword or theme (search campaigns)
- utm_content=ad variant, such as headline_a

Add the parameters to the final URL of the ad, or to a tracking template at account, campaign or ad group level so they apply to many ads at once.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Do I need UTM parameters if auto-tagging is on?
- No. Auto-tagging is enough for Google Ads reporting in Google Analytics. UTMs are useful when you want identical naming across platforms or use tools that do not read gclid.
- What medium should I use for Google Ads?
- cpc is the standard value for paid search. Display and video campaigns often use display or video.
- Can I use ValueTrack parameters in utm_term?
- Yes, Google Ads supports dynamic values like {keyword} in tracking templates. Build the static part here and add the dynamic placeholder in Google Ads.
- Will UTM parameters hurt my Quality Score?
- No. The parameters are only read by analytics tools and do not change the landing page content.
