The image is analysed in your browser with a QR decoding library and is never uploaded. It tries both normal and inverted codes. For best results use a sharp image where the code fills a good part of the picture.
Reading the content first is a good safety habit: malicious QR codes can point to phishing pages, and this lets you inspect the address before visiting.
