How to use Word Counter
- Type or paste your text into the box.
- Read the live counts for words, characters, sentences, paragraphs and lines.
- Use the reading and speaking time estimates to plan an article, speech or video script.
About this tool
The counter treats a word as a run of letters or digits, so hyphenated words and contractions such as "don't" count once. Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute and speaking time about 130 words per minute, which are common averages for adults.
Counting runs in your browser. The text is not sent anywhere, so you can safely check drafts and private documents.
Frequently Asked Questions

- Is my text stored?
- No. Everything is calculated locally in your browser.
