About this tool
JPEG is a lossy format designed for photographs, with small files and no transparency. PNG is a lossless format with full transparency support. Choosing between them depends on where the image will be used: JPEG is common for photographs and web images, while PNG suits logos, screenshots, icons and graphics with sharp edges.
PNG is lossless, so the image keeps its exact pixels. Converting a JPEG to PNG does not restore detail that JPEG compression already removed, and the file will usually get larger.
The conversion uses your browser's own image engine, so nothing is uploaded and there is no file size limit beyond your device's memory. Very large images over 100 megapixels are refused to avoid freezing the page.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Will I lose quality converting JPEG to PNG?
- No further loss is introduced by PNG itself, but detail already lost by JPEG compression cannot be recovered.
- Is transparency kept?
- JPEG has no transparency, so there is none to keep.
- Are my images uploaded to a server?
- No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser and the files never leave your device.
