About this tool
Basal metabolic rate (BMR) is the energy your body uses at rest. It is estimated with the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, which is considered one of the more accurate formulas. Multiplying BMR by an activity factor gives total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), the calories needed to maintain your weight.
A common starting point for weight loss is a deficit of about 500 calories per day, and for gain a surplus of about 250 to 500. This calculator gives general estimates from standard formulas and is not medical advice. Talk to a doctor or dietitian about your own health.
